China is prepared to tackle the issue of climate change should the U.S. decide to pull out of the Paris agreement, according to ChinaDaily and Reuters. Leaders of the European Union and climate experts are very concerned about the issue because of the new U.S. administration having appointed people that deny the existence of climate change. An official working for the EU mentioned that Europe will now look toward China to make sure that it is not the only continent of nations that has to deal with climate change.
China is now a world leader in clean energy technology investments and deployment. Meanwhile, the U.S. is still stuck wondering what to do about the coal jobs that have been lost. China is looking ahead toward the future of the planet, while the U.S. has a climate change denier at the top of its government, something that may have seemed unthinkable even several years ago.
China’s President Xi Jinping has emphasized the importance of the Paris climate deal, saying that it must not be allowed to fail because if it does, then the world will inflict much damage to the environment. China had also pledged in 2015 to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions as a unit of GDP by 60% to 65% from the levels that they were at in 2005. I look ahead with optimism that Europe and China can engage in this task of protecting the environment because if they don’t, there will be a serious threat to human and animal life on Earth.
